COMLEX-USA Level 2-PE
Assessment of Fundamental Clinical Skills for Osteopathic Medical Practice
COMLEX Level 2-Performance Evaluation (Level 2-PE) was an assessment administered 2004-2020 and designed to measure a DO candidate’s competencies for osteopathic medical practice within two scored examination domains: the Humanistic Domain and the Biomedical/Biomechanical Domain.
The exam included 12 encounters with standardized patients, and candidates were assessed on the following skills: physician-patient communication, interpersonal skills and professionalism; incorporating hands-on physical exams and other data-gathering skills; building a patient history, performing osteopathic manipulative treatment; and documentation in a SOAP note format, including formulation of a differential diagnosis and diagnostic and treatment plan.
COMLEX-USA Level 2-PE was suspended indefinitely in February 2021 and formally discontinued in June 2022. COMLEX-USA candidates are currently verified by their COM dean that they are proficient in these important clinical skills.

NBOME Board Accepts Final Report from Special Commission
Based on this report, the Board has made statements and endorsed specific action items.
The Future of Clinical Skills Assessment
The NBOME is currently exploring new and innovative ways to continue measuring proficiency in these important areas. On the completion of its work, the Special Commission for Osteopathic Medical Licensure Assessment (Special Commission) recommended the development and piloting of a core competency capstone for osteopathic medical students that would assess patient-physician communication skills and hands-on physical exam and OMT skills in a multi-station OSCE model using standardized patients that is designed for entry into residency program level.
In June 2022, the NBOME Board accepted this recommendation, and work has begun on the Core Competency Capstone for DOs (C3DO).

The Core Osteopathic Recognition Readiness Examination
The Core Osteopathic Recognition Readiness Examination (CORRE) was a collaboration between the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) and the NBOME and was administered between August 2018 and April 2023.
The examination was designed for non-DO physicians or medical students applying to an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) residency program with Osteopathic Recognition (OR). CORRE assessed understanding of the foundations of osteopathic care, including osteopathic concepts, philosophy, diagnosis, and technique.
The NBOME recommends continuing medical education or professional development programs focused on Osteopathic Principles and Practices and Osteopathic Manipulative Techniques that are consistent with the purpose of CORRE.
