The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), an independent, nonprofit organization that provides competency assessments for osteopathic medical licensure and related health care professions, has appointed Gretta A. Gross, DO, MEd, as Executive Vice President for Assessment & Chief Assessment Officer.
Reporting to the president & CEO, Gross provides leadership, guidance, and direction to major NBOME testing departments and will create and execute strategies to guide the development and innovation of the NBOME’s current and future assessment tools.
Gross previously served the NBOME as vice president for clinical skills testing from 2018 to 2021. In that role, she led the development and administration for the COMLEX-USA Level 2- PE examination; client clinical skills and oral practical examinations; and research supporting the development of emerging technologies and innovations in clinical skills testing. For almost 20 years, Gross served in various roles on NBOME’s National Faculty.

Gross has held numerous roles in graduate medical education (GME), including program director and faculty roles at the WellSpan Health York Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), the Commonwealth Medical College, the Wilkes-Barre Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency Program, and the Houston Healthcare Family Medicine Residency Program. She comes to the NBOME after several years as an accreditation field representative on the staff of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
She has served on the Board of Trustees and as secretary/treasurer for the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Family Physicians Society and has participated with various committees for the American Academy of Osteopathy and American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Gross remains active with these organizations and is also an engaged member of the American Osteopathic Association, the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and the American Association of Family Physicians.
Gross received her osteopathic medical degree from PCOM where she also completed an osteopathic manipulative medicine undergraduate fellowship and her undergraduate degree from Juniata College. She earned a master’s degree in medical education from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and maintains board certification in family medicine and osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine.
