PHILADELPHIA, PA—The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), an independent, nonprofit organization that provides competency assessments for osteopathic medical licensure and related health care professions, announced the addition of several new Board members and recognized outgoing members for their service at the NBOME Board Meeting and Retreat in December.
New Board Members
Gregory E. Harris, DO
Gregory E. Harris, DO, is a hematologist/oncologist at the Harbin Clinic in Rome, Ga. He has served the NBOME as a member of the Special Commission on Osteopathic Medical Licensure Assessment and the Independent Review Committee. He spent several years working with the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), as a New Physician in Practice Board member and chair of the Bureau of Emerging Leaders. In that role, he represented osteopathic students, post-doctoral trainees, and new physicians in practice on the AOA Board of Trustees and attended the NBOME Liaison Committee. He is president-elect of the Georgia Osteopathic Medical Association and is also a member of the Florida and Michigan osteopathic medical associations; the American Society of Clinical Oncology; the American Society of Hematology; and the University of Pikeville Board of Trustees. He earned his osteopathic medical degree from University of Pikeville – Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Robert W. Hostoffer, DO, MBA, MEd
Robert W. Hostoffer, DO, MBA, MEd, is an allergist, immunologist, and pediatrician who currently practices at Allergy/Immunology Associates in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. He currently directs the Allergy/Immunology Fellowship at University Hospitals in Cleveland, which has received Osteopathic Recognition from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. He also holds academic appointments at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Athens, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). He has served the osteopathic profession as a member of the American Osteopathic Association Board of Trustees, as past president of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians, and as a member of the Cleveland Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, the Cleveland Allergy Association, and the Ohio Osteopathic Association. He earned his osteopathic medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Janie L. Myers, DO
Janie L. Myers, DO, is a surgeon specializing in laparoscopic procedures at the Terre Haute Regional Hospital in Indiana. She is a member of the NBOME National Faculty in the Clinical Department of Surgery, is a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACOS), and a Fellow of both the ACOS and the American College of Surgeons. She has served the ACOS in numerous roles, including secretary/treasurer, chair of general surgery, and as a founding member of the ACOS’ Inclusivity Diversity Equality Action national committee. Her volunteer efforts include working with the Wabash Valley Breast Cancer Survivors, Inc., the Minority Health Coalition of Terre Haute, and the Vigo Parke Vermillion Medical Society and the Commission on Physician Assistance, both of which are sections of the Indiana State Medical Society. She also is chair of the Black Business Alliance, board member of the Terre Haute, Ind. Chamber of Commerce, and an elected official serving as County Coroner for Vigo County, Indiana. She received her osteopathic medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Julieanne P. Sees, DO, MBA
Julieanne P. Sees, DO, MBA, is a pediatric neuro-orthopedic surgeon who specializes in care for children and young adults with neuromuscular conditions, chronic brain disease, and orthopedic disorders. Sees is executive medical director of neuro-orthopedics/spine surgery for CVS Health Medical Health Services Northeast Territory and Fellow of Osteopathic Medicine with the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. She is also the president of the Delaware State Osteopathic Medical Society, vice president of the American Osteopathic Foundation, and serves on the American Osteopathic Association Board of Trustees and the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics Board of Directors. She received her osteopathic medical degree from Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.
David J. Stephen, DO
David J. Stephen, DO, is the associate dean of fourth-year and graduate medical education, assistant professor, and discipline chair of pathology and histology at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine–Auburn campus. He also currently serves on the NBOME COMLEX-USA Composite Examination Committee and has participated in numerous item review activities for COMLEX USA Level 1. Prior to becoming a physician he worked in a variety of health-related roles, including pharmaceutical sales, at the Lions Medical Eye Bank in Norfolk, Va.; in clinical trials management for PRA International in Charlottesville, Va.; and as director of a vocational nursing school in Richmond, Va. He received his osteopathic medical degree from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Virginia.
Barbara E. Walker, DO
Barbara E. Walker, DO, is a consultant to the Office of the Medical Director of the North Carolina Medical Board. She is a founding faculty member of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC, and served many years there as the program director for the osteopathic family medicine residency. She has been a member of the NBOME National Faculty since 2018 and has served on the COMLEX-USA Level 1 Standard Setting Committee, the COMLEX-USA Composite Examination Committee, and on the Special Commission on Osteopathic Medical Licensure Assessment. In 2018, she received the NBOME Clark Award for Patient Advocacy, which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated unwavering advocacy for quality patient care. She holds academic appointments at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Virginia campus; and the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. She received her osteopathic medical degree from Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Outgoing Board Members
Peter B. Ajluni, DO
Peter B. Ajluni, DO, is an orthopedic surgeon in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. He joined the NBOME Board of Directors in 2013 and served most recently on the Compensation Subcommittee and the Executive and Nominating committees. He previously served on the Finance and Audit committees. He is a past president of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), past board president of the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF), and currently serves on the board of directors for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Ajluni has also served as a board member for several other professional organizations, including the Michigan Osteopathic Association, the Macomb County Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, and the Osteopathic International Alliance. He received his osteopathic medical degree from Chicago College of Osteopathy (now Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine).
Jed G. Magen, DO, MS
Jed G. Magen, DO, MS, is associate professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University (MSU). There, he works with fellow department members on issues of access to mental health treatment in ethnically diverse populations and in Muslim communities in Michigan. He joined the NBOME Board in 2014 and served on the Executive Committee in 2017. He also is chair of the NBOME Test Accommodations Committee. He has served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service’s Indian Health Service, and is a former president of the both American Osteopathic College of Neurologists and Psychiatrists and of the Michigan Psychiatric Society. He also served two terms on the American Osteopathic Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and on the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Psychiatry. He received his osteopathic medical degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Michael F. Oliverio, DO
Michael F. Oliverio, DO, is a solo practice osteopathic physician delivering osteopathic manipulative medicine and osteopathic family medicine to his patients on Long Island, NY. His service to NBOME began in 2001 as an exam reviewer/item writer, and he has served as National Chair for COMLEX USA Level 3 and for COMVEX. He was named to the NBOME Board of Directors in 2020 and was awarded the John E. Thornburg, DO, PhD, National Faculty Leadership Award in 2022. He has lectured nationally on osteopathic manipulative treatments (OMT) in primary care, and previously served as executive director of the New York chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and as vice chair of the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. He earned his osteopathic medical degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM—now the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine).
Richard A. Ortoski, DO
Richard A. Ortoski, DO, is regional dean, chair, and professor of primary care medicine/family medicine at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie, Pa. He has been at LECOM since its founding in 1992, and served as director of the history and physical diagnosis course, and as founder and co-director of the Primary Care Scholars Pathway. He has worked with the NBOME for nearly 25 years, in numerous roles including as a member of the Case Development Committee for COMLEX-USA Level 2-PE, the Level 2-PE Advisory Committee (where he also served as chair), the Blueprint Subcommittee, the Blue Ribbon Panel on Enhancing COMLEX-USA, the NBOME Standards and Assurances Committee, the COMLEX-USA Composite Examination Committee, and the Clinical Competency Capstone for Osteopathic Medicine (C3DO) Task Force. He remains involved in case development for the C3DO project. He was elected to the NBOME Board in 2014 and served on the Executive Committee, the Nominating Committee, and as chair of the Awards Committee. Ortoski is renowned for his work in HIV medicine, serving for 25 years as the medical director for a Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program-funded clinic. He also is a certified HIV specialist with the American Academy of HIV Medicine and is recognized as an HIV specialist by the Infectious Disease Society of America. He received his osteopathic medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Geraldine T. O’Shea, DO
Geraldine T. O’Shea, DO has practiced internal medicine at the Foothills Women’s Medical Center in Jackson, Calif. since 1998 and serves as the center’s medical director. She completed her tenure as immediate past chair of the NBOME Board. She became a member of the NBOME Board of Directors in 2009 and has served on the Awards, COMLEX-USA Composite Examination, Finance, Compensation, Liaison, and Executive committees, and on the SAS for GME Task Force. She was also NBOME Board secretary-treasurer from 2015- 2017, chair-elect from 2017-2019, and was named Board chair in December 2019, concluding her term in December 2021. In December 2022, Dr. O’Shea received the Santucci Award, the highest honor the NBOME bestows. She has served the osteopathic profession in numerous capacities for the Osteopathic Medical Board of California, American Association of Osteopathic Examiners, the Federation of State Medical Boards, the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California, and the American Osteopathic Association. She received her osteopathic medical degree from the Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific.
